Open WiFi and Child Porn Accusations

danger-free-wi-fiChild pornography is very bad. It’s illegal, immoral, and it preys on the most vulnerable in our society. People who engage in it get no sympathy at all when they’re caught. What’s worse than child pornography? Maybe being accused of trafficking in it when you’re completely innocent. It’s hard to think about it but it’s relatively easy to imagine it happening due to an open WiFi connection and an excitable police department.

But that’s what happened recently at 6:20 in the morning to a man in Buffalo, NY. He was awoken by police offers who broke down his door and accused him of downloading child porn the night before. The police confiscated all of the computers in the house and examined them for evidence, finding absolutely nothing. It was only then that they realized that the man had a new router set up. One that he was unable to figure out how to enable wireless security, so he simply ran it as an open system. Further looking through the router logs showed that someone connected to a computer at SUNY Buffalo. This person was later identified as a student living nearby who was the one downloading the offensive media.
